Virtual library service from Weds 25th March

From Wednesday 25th March, Exeter Health Library staff will be working remotely for the foreseeable future.

The Library is currently still open and available for you to use, equipped with 18 NHS networked PCs and quiet study space. Doors are open 0830-1730, Monday to Friday. Those who are registered for 24/7 access will still be able to access the library whenever they need to.  Library access will be reviewed, and may change in accordance to government and Trust advice.

Our book collection is there to be browsed and borrowed using the self-issue facilities or our book alarm report sheets – detailed instructions are provided in the Library. As per our previous update, we are advising borrowers to keep hold of their books until further notice. The book drop in Oasis is closed, and we are not placing reservations, renewing items, sending reminders or issuing fines or other charges.

You can of course still access our e-resources using your NHS OpenAthens login. If you aren’t already registered you can sign up here. And if you need articles from journals we don’t subscribe to we are still tracking these down from other sources for you – just continue to submit your requests as usual – although supply times may vary as other libraries are also facing challenging circumstances.

We are monitoring our inbox and will endeavour to respond to enquiries, including requests for support with searching, in a timely fashion.

Our Literature Searching service continues too, an online search request form is available.

Please note we will not be picking up messages on our answerphone – apologies for the inconvenience.

Our website is a fantastic source of information on all our services, from Topic Guides providing information resources for a whole host of specialities, to hints and tips for conducting your own searches, as well as all the forms you need to request services from the team. You can also find up to date information about our service offer as the impact of COVID19 plays out.

COVID-19 plans in the event of library closure

The Library remains open at the moment, albeit with reduced staffing and some staff remote working.

In the event that the library has to be closed due to COVID-19, we will be offering a virtual service.

If that is the case, there are a number of resources and services which will be available to you both at home or in the workplace:

  • UpToDate and BMJ Best Practice
These point of care tools are both available via Hub>Non-Clinical Systems if you are working on site, or with an NHS OpenAthens account if you are working from home.
  • Journals and Databases
You can access a wealth of information, research and journal articles from the Journals and Databases section of NHS Evidence. You will need an NHS OpenAthens account to access the databases and journals.
  • Document supply
If your NHS OpenAthens account doesn’t give you access to an article you need, please complete our journal article request form, and we’ll try and obtain a copy for you. This may take slightly longer than usual, but we’ll do our best to get you what you need.
  • E-books
If the library is closed, you won’t be able to borrow or return our print books – if you have some out already, just hold onto them for now. We have a growing collection of e-books you can access with your NHS OpenAthens account, to browse the collections, see our E-Books page. If there is a particular book you need, use our book/chapter request form and we can try and source electronic access for you, where possible.
  • Training
While we won’t be able to offer face-to-face training, if you need any help with learning how to access the journals, or search the databases, we have a Searching Help guide, and library staff who will be able to help you remotely. We’re looking into video conferencing and remote training tools.
  • Literature search service
We will be offering a remote literature search service for Trust/clinical related evidence searches (not for academic purposes). Please complete a literature search request form and one of the team will complete a search for you, although this may take a little longer than it usually does, so please give as much notice as you can.
  • Evidence updates
If you want to stay up to date with the latest articles and evidence in your area, you can sign up for our KnowledgeShare evidence update service. Complete our KnowledgeShare registration form and we’ll set up a profile for you, and you will start receiving regular evidence updates by email.
  • Topic Guides
Did you know about our Topic guides, which provide information resources for a whole host of specialties? If you’d like one for your specialty or clinical area, please get in touch and we can set one up for you.

There are also lots of resources and Help on our library website.

If there is anything you need, library staff will be available via email rde-tr.library@nhs.net or Twitter.

Stay safe and well.
